  • 2025 IESNYC Student Lighting Competition: “A Sight For Sore Eyes”

The rise of LEDs brings efficiency and control, but also issues like glare, flicker, and harsh spectral peaks that can cause eye strain. While decorative light like a chandelier can be pleasant, exposed LEDs in streetlights, blue car headlights, or flickering lights on camera can be uncomfortable. Good lighting design balances visual comfort with functional performance.

  • A non-glaring bedside lighting solution

Turning on a light in the dark can cause discomfort. Some designs make the switch hard to locate, often forcing users to look directly at the light.

Designed to ensure comfort from the first touch of turning on to the touch of turning off, the bedside light features an integrated mechanism that allows effortless control to adjusting the brightness, which need no direct eye contact.

  • Design for bedroom interiors, the exterior uses walnut and fabric wrapping to complement furniture like wooden tables and curtains.

Mechanism & Prototyping

To ensure smooth gear engagement and rotation while maintaining sufficient light transmission, I conducted a series of prototypes and experimented with various forms and structural combinations.
